Back to the Bush

Throughout the winter my family and I have been running on out treadmill inside, while outside it's cold, often rainy, and certainly not nice weather to be out running in. And the treadmill has been good. We've enjoyed training on it.

But there came a nice day this week, where the sun was shining and the air, if not exactly warm, was at least not too cold. And we decided to venture out to have our first run in the bush since autumn.

I'd forgotten how it felt to run through the trees, with the sun warming you, and a breeze keeping you just cool enough. I'd forgotten how you breathed in the smells of the bush as you ran. I'd forgotten how distance didn't seem to matter when you were running with a group of sisters. And I'd forgotten how good it felt to be outside and running through the bush.

Running on a treadmill is great for keeping up your fitness during the cold months. It's good for running when it's too wet to go outside. But it still can't compare to running through the beauty of the bush, with your family around you. Somehow, running with other people around you just seems to complete the experience.

It's still not warm enough to do this every day. It's not light enough to resume getting up and running first thing in the morning either. But there the promise of more bush running to come. And I can wait, however impatiently, for the time when we'll be out there every day, running down out secret bush tracks.

  1. Here it's too hot to run outside. Too hot and humid. Maybe when it cools down this fall...

    1. Summer is the worst time to run outside really, unless you get up early, like we did last summer. Then it's nice and cool and beautiful weather for running in. Getting out of bed early on the other hand, is not so nice...

  2. How funny to read about how cold it is when our daytime temps are in the 90's here. But I'll get to experience what you're experiencing in the coming months, probably around November. Then I'll be hitting the treadmill. :)

    1. It's funny for me being cold here and hearing about all the heat in other places. Treadmills are invaluable in cold weather, aren't they?

  3. See, you make it sound so wonderful (running, that is). I wish my running could be so... pleasant. I'm more focused on maintaining proper breathing than my surroundings. Still, I see what you say is so very true. Very nice post. :)
    Keep on running!

    1. Thanks. I only get to look at the scenery until I start getting tired sadly. And then, like you, I'm only trying not to die from lack of air.

Nice to hear from you Dream3r. Feels like it's been a long time since we chatted in the cabin.

  4. I am SO not a runner, but I'll walk anywhere. It's too hot here in the summer for long walks though, unless I get outside by 6 or 7 a.m., which isn't going to happen. :) So I use a treadmill mostly until the weather cools down. In the fall I will be outside every day. My favorite time of year.

    1. Getting up and going out by 6 or 7 am is an acquired taste, certainly. I probably wouldn't ever make it out to run at that time if no one else was going. Using a treadmill to walk in the hot weather is a great idea though. And I agree, autumn is one of the best times of year.

  5. We had to join a gym because it's so hot and smoky here, we can't run or walk outside too much. But now I'm biking at the gym and it feels pretty good. I can't wait for fall so I can be outside again. Good luck with the running!

    1. Biking inside would be great in the hot, smoky weather. I'm guessing the gym is air conditioned, which would be great. Good luck with your biking.

  6. We seriously need a treadmill. That will motivate me to work out more. And with those fancy laptop desks, even more so. :)

    1. I've heard of those laptop desks for treadmills. They sound like a great invention. The closest I've got to that is reading on my tablet while walking. I'd love to try one of those desks. That's just the way to motivate a writer to work out.
