Blogging Days

Everywhere around the blogosphere I see people who have special 'days' on their blogs. One day might  be a Funny Picture Friday. Another might be a Worst Hairdo Wednesday. And on these days, they write on these certain subjects, like a theme day.

The idea of having certain days for posting on certain subjects is very interesting. By having a theme day, you'd never worry about what topic to write on, and your readers would know what days their favourite kinds of posts were posted on.

But then, what if you didn't want to post on that topic? What if you got to Worst Hairdo Wednesday and suddenly came up with a great post about that crazy paper mache model you made of your favourite book cover but you couldn't post it because it didn't fit with the theme of the day?

So today I have a question for you: What do you think about having subject days on a blog, and, do you use them?

  1. I think it's a nice idea, but mustn't be treated too seriously. If you're an unorganized blogger like myself, just do a Worst Hairdo Wednesday when you actually can think of good material for it. If you're a nice, organized person, schedule it to be every two weeks or even once-a-month. That way you have time for other things, and your readers don't get tired of the same thing all the time. Lots of times I see blogs that have nothing BUT their weekly feature, and that's not good. Variety is the spice of life, you know!

As for whether I do it myself, as you know I do Song Saturdays once in a while - when I can think of a good song to post, or simply when I remember to do it. I have other recurring post themes like my Favorite Poetry posts, but they're not scheduled to be posted on certain days.

    1. Variety is probably the best thing for me. I'd never have a post written on the right subject on the right day. I'm way too disorganised that way. I don't know about followers getting bored, but I might get bored!

  2. I think it's easier to decide whether it will work for you, once you are sure of the purpose of your blog, Immy. If you want to learn about a topic or make new friends, it might be worthwhile. If you want to build your readership numbers and the theme doesn't interest them, then maybe it's not such a great idea.

I wonder if just a couple of theme days may work well, if you decide to do it. Then, there's still time for other interests. Also, you might post twice on a day if you were really inspired to.

I also think it helps to choose a theme you're really interested in and, then, you'll look forward to it and, maybe, even learn something from it. This is what I'm finding with my photography and nature days. I kind of suspect that a worst hairdo day might lose its appeal pretty quicky, though - unless you got really creative about it!

Another idea might be to plan to do the theme for just a few weeks before moving on to a new interest. And, be flexible so that you don't feel obliged to post something if you don't feel motivated to.

    Just a few thoughts:-)
    God bless xx

    1. I think that theme days would probably lose their appeal very quickly, and, as you said, would only be good for a short time.

Thankfully I wasn't considering doing a Worst Hairdo Wednesday. It was only a silly example I came up with.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. They've given me a lot to think in.

  3. Not a huge fan of the scheduled days myself, Imogen. I like the spice that the unexpected post can bring. As you can tell by my helterskelter blogging style. lol

At the end of the day I basically think you have to do what works for you. Some folks can't get motivated without the schedule. Some folks feel constricted by schedules. Whatever gets you out of bed in the morning is the right thing to do. :)

    1. Not sticking to a schedule is probably one of the things I excel at. It's hard enough to remember to post some days. I don't think I could stick to theme days. When I get excited about something, I want to post on it at once. I pity my poor blog readers putting up with my over excitement sometimes.

  4. I do them simply because with my writing, publishing, editing and daily life, I would never have the time to do non themed. It helps knowing what day is what, and being my blog is just for my writing, that helps as well.

Anyhow, I do save Thursdays for random things. Things that have happened to me, ramblings, thoughts, so forth. It is my non themed day.

    1. I can see that in your case, themed days would definitely help. And having a day for random stuff is a great idea. I guess whether or not a person uses theme days is affected partly by how busy they are and how much it helps them.

  5. Actually I don't. I have three days I blog a week (little less right now since I am working on my next book) but outside of the first Wednesday for the Insecure Writers Support Group, it's a free-for-all.

    1. I blog three days a week too(well, unless I get busy or forget), but that's about as organised as I get with these blogging days. It's fun being able to blog about anything. Except when I want to publish fifteen posts about writing in a row. My other readers might not appreciate that.

  6. I don't really care for them. I don't really read blogs that are wholly comprised of theme posts. They lose so much of the spontaneity, the creativity, and the personality. Surprises and something really present and personal are much more special.

    1. I often surprise myself with what I end up writing. And surprise post subjects on other blogs are so much fun. I think that having theme posts all the time would get really stale after a while. How could you keep finding a fresh angle on the same subject? Maybe a loose theme, like posting writing posts on a certain day would be better.
